Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace
A valuable iron-making furnace heritage that supported Japan's development
This is the only existing reverberatory furnace in the world that was actually in operation, representing the cutting-edge technology of the time that supported weapon manufacturing in the late Edo period. In 2015, it was registered as a World Heritage Site under the name "Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining". The towering chimney made of stone is a symbol!
