The Shimanto River, also known as Japan's last clear stream, is a place where you can observe fireflies and other creatures that can only survive in clean water. It has been selected as one of Japan's three great clear streams, one of Japan's top 100 hidden scenic spots, and one of Japan's top 100 water sources. Ashizuri Cape, one of the representative tourist attractions in the area, is located at the southernmost tip of Shikoku and offers a breathtaking view of the vast ocean stretching far into the distance. River Shrimp Karaage
Freshwater shrimp with a refreshing flavor.
"Kawa-ebi no Karaage" refers to Tenaga-ebi (freshwater shrimp) from the Shimanto River, and those that are less than 10 cm in size are said to be delicious. They are small, but packed with umami flavor, and it is recommended to enjoy the taste of the ingredient by boiling them with salt or frying them as karaage.
Katsuo no Tataki from Kochi Prefecture
Japan's highest consumption of bonito! The straw-grilled one is exquisite.
Katsuo no Tataki is a dish made from bonito that is enjoyed all over Japan and is said to have originated in Kochi Prefecture (although there are different theories). It is also designated as the "prefectural fish" and can be eaten almost all year round except for a short period in winter. In autumn, "modori katsuo" with a lot of fat is delicious, while in early summer, "hatsu katsuo" with a refreshing and colorful taste is recommended. Please try it.
Natural Eel of Shimanto River
Valuable natural eel with firm flesh and rich fat.
Natural eel grown by eating river shrimp and green seaweed in the Shimanto River, the last clear stream in Japan, is very rare and has firm flesh and rich fat. The season is from April to September, but it's lucky to be able to eat it whenever available.
Shimizu Mackerel
Mackerel with fresh and fatty sashimi.
Shimizu Mackerel can be enjoyed as sashimi, which is rare for mackerel, as it is brought back to the fish tank after being caught and then live-shipped to be prepared. The mackerel grown in the nutrient-rich waters off Ashizuri Cape is fatty like toro (fatty tuna).
Aosa Nori
Grown in brackish water, with a rich aroma and soft texture.
Aosa Nori is cultivated in the brackish water where the freshwater of the Shimanto River and the seawater mix at the mouth of the river, and is harvested manually. It has a beautiful green color, is juicy and soft, and can be enjoyed with a crispy texture when fried as tempura.
