Hiraoka Hachimangu Shrine
The oldest Hachimangu shrine in Kyoto, founded by Kukai
This is the oldest Hachimangu shrine in Kyoto, founded by Kukai (also known as Kobo Daishi), who painted the image of Hachiman, the god of war, himself. The highlight of the shrine is the "flower ceiling," which is open to the public twice a year in spring and autumn. The 44 brightly colored flower paintings on the ceiling are truly breathtaking.
