Sahei Hirose, who promoted the modernization of the Besshi Copper Mine from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, nurtured Japan's modern industry and laid the foundation for the Sumitomo Group. The Hirose Historical Museum consists of an exhibition hall that traces the history of the birth of Shingai City and the modernization of Japan through Sahei's footsteps, and the former Hirose residence (a nationally designated important cultural property and scenic spot) built around the Meiji period. In addition, the garden surrounding the former residence (the former Hirose Garden) is designated as a national scenic spot.
