Highlights

Point 1

Climb the Highest Peak in Western Japan

Ishizuchi Mountain Climb the Highest Peak in Western Japan
The summit of Ishizuchi Mountain is 1,982 meters above sea level, making it the highest peak in western Japan. From the summit, you can not only enjoy a panoramic view of Shikoku, including the Seto Inland Sea, Tosa Bay, and Mount Ken in Tokushima, but also see mountains in the Chugoku and Kyushu regions. Depending on the time of day, you can also enjoy watching the sunrise, sunset, or sea of clouds from the summit. Ishizuchi Mountain is known as a power spot, so just being there can help you recharge your energy.
Point 2

Challenge Yourself on Chains on a Cliff

Ishizuchi Mountain Challenge Yourself on Chains on a Cliff
On Mt. Ishizuchi, there is a place called "Chain Trail" where you can actually climb a cliff using chains. Originally set up as a training ground, now even general visitors can climb using chains. There are four locations, but for first-time climbers, we recommend starting with "Chain One". Enjoy a unique climbing experience, but be sure to take safety precautions while challenging yourself!
Point 3

Experience the Four Seasons at Mt. Ishizuchi

Ishizuchi Mountain Experience the Four Seasons at Mt. Ishizuchi
Mt. Ishizuchi is home to various plants ranging from warm-temperate forests to subtropical forests, making it enjoyable throughout the year. In spring, you can enjoy cherry blossoms and wildflowers, in summer, hiking among lush green trees, in autumn, colorful autumn leaves, and in winter, a world covered in pure white snow. Among these seasons, the recommended time to visit is during the autumn leaves. The leaves turn a blazing red, making for a spectacular sight!
Point 4

Enjoy a Pleasant Drive on the UFO Line

Ishizuchi Mountain Enjoy a Pleasant Drive on the UFO Line
If you're heading to Mt. Ishizuchi by car, be sure to take the "UFO Line," a road that spans Kochi and Ehime prefectures. It's about 27 km long and has an elevation of 1,300 to 1,700 meters, making it a road that leads to the sky. It's a scenic driving course where you can enjoy azaleas in spring, lush greenery in summer, and autumn leaves in fall. However, please note that it's closed from late November to early April!
Point 5

Enjoy Spectacular Views on a Ropeway

Ishizuchi Mountain Enjoy Spectacular Views on a Ropeway
On Mt. Ishizuchi, there is a ropeway that connects the Sanjo Station at the foot of the mountain to the Seishu Station at the summit, covering a distance of about 1.8 km. The breathtaking views you can see while leisurely swaying on the approximately 8-minute ropeway are different from the scenery you see while climbing the mountain. From the Seishu Station at the summit, there is a climbing course that leads to the top of the mountain, so let's aim for the summit after getting off the ropeway!

Access

Ishizuchi Mountain Recommended Access by Car
Recommended Access by Car
There are two climbing routes to Mt. Ishizuchi. The first, "Jōju-sha (Ropeway-mae Bus Stop)," is about a 30-minute drive from JR Iyo-Saijo Station or about an hour by bus. The second, "Do-goya (Ishizuchi Do-goya Bus Stop)," is about a 1 hour and 50-minute drive from Matsuyama IC or about 2 hours and 10 minutes from JR Matsuyama Station. You can also take a bus from Matsuyama Station to Do-goya, but it takes about 3 hours with transfers, so it can be difficult. Both climbing routes have parking lots, so you can rest assured!

Required time

Ishizuchi Mountain Secure a Full Day for Climbing
Secure a Full Day for Climbing
If you're visiting Mt. Ishizuchi, I highly recommend climbing it, so it's best to secure a full day for it. Taking the Omote-sando route using the ropeway takes about 3 hours one way, while taking the Do-goya route takes about 2 and a half hours one way. Considering that the time to get to Mt. Ishizuchi is not included, and taking breaks along the way or enjoying the view from the summit, it seems like a full day would be enough to take it easy.
