This is the only surviving reverberatory furnace in the world that was actually in operation, and it is the culmination of the state-of-the-art technology that supported weapon manufacturing in the late Edo period. In 2015, it was registered as a World Heritage Site under the name "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining". Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace is the site of a reverberatory furnace located in Izu-no-kuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace is registered as a World Heritage Site as a modern industrial heritage site due to its historical value and is part of it.

Access

Access Information to Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace
Access to Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace is smooth and convenient by utilizing various means of transportation. Below are the main access methods. If using the Shinkansen, you will arrive at Mishima Station in about 60 minutes from Tokyo Station, about 1 hour and 40 minutes from Nagoya Station, and about 3 hours from Shin-Osaka Station. If using the Izu-Hakone Railway, you will arrive at Izu-Nagaoka Station in about 20 minutes from Mishima Station, and from there, it's about a 30-minute walk to Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace. If using a car, use the Tomei Expressway or Shin-Tomei Expressway and it will take about 60 minutes (from Tokyo), about 2 hours and 30 minutes (from Nagoya), and about 5 hours (from Osaka) to get to "Numazu Interchange" or "Nagaizumi Numazu Interchange". From there, proceed through the Izu Jukan Expressway to the "Ema Interchange", and finally take the prefectural road to "Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace". There is also a free parking lot available. There are various ways to access Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace.

History

Egawa Tarosaburo Eiryu's Technological Challenge
The history of the Niiyama Refinery dates back to the end of the Edo period, when Egawa Tarosaburo Eiryu (also known as Tan'an) was active as the Niiyama magistrate. He proposed building a refinery at the Shinagawa Daiba for the manufacture of cannons. Through trial and error, and by studying books written in Dutch at the time, he overcame technical difficulties and completed the Niiyama Refinery. This refinery played a groundbreaking role in the manufacture of cannons and was an innovative presence for the people of the time. The history of the Niiyama Refinery was built on Tan'an's technological challenges and efforts, and his achievements were greatly admired. The passion and advanced technology of Tan'an built the history of the Niiyama Refinery. Its achievements have been passed down to the present day, and as a valuable industrial heritage, the Niiyama Refinery conveys the charm of its history and technology to many people.
