This is the oldest five-storied pagoda in Tohoku, said to have been built by Taira no Masakado. The current tower was rebuilt about 600 years ago and was designated a national treasure in 1966. The "Jiji Cedar," which is about 1,000 years old and has a circumference of over 10 meters near the tower, is a must-see. This spot is imbued with the weight and depth of faith.

The Hagurosan Five-Story Pagoda is the center of Tohoku Buddhist culture and has been designated a national treasure. It was once known as the five-story pagoda of the Takimizu Temple, and there were many temples in the surrounding area. However, now only the five-story pagoda remains, located on the left side of the entrance to Ichinokura, towering beautifully in cedar wood and thatched with persimmon leaves. The current five-story pagoda was rebuilt about 600 years ago by Muto Masashi, the lord of the Shonai region and the deputy chief priest of Hagurosan. Along with its historical background, the graceful appearance of the tower is its charm. Hagurosan is the center of Buddhist culture in the Tohoku region and is loved by many people as a symbol of it. Yudono-san Shrine is known as a spiritual site of Shugendo. Yudono Mountain, with an elevation of 1,504 meters, is a gently sloping ridge located on the southwest side of Mt. Tsukiyama. The main shrine of Yudono-san Shrine is considered to be the inner shrine of the Dewa Sanzan, and there are strict rules such as no photography and no shoes allowed when visiting the shrine. There is no shrine building, and instead, a large brownish-red spiritual rock that spews hot water is worshipped as the object of worship. To visit the shrine, you must first receive a purification ceremony. After the ceremony, you can finally worship the object of worship at the designated location. Yudono Mountain is also known as the "Mountain of Love" and is a popular spot for matchmaking. The "Love Mountain Charm," which can only be obtained at Yudono Mountain, is known as a particularly attractive charm for women. Visitors to Yudono-san Shrine can purify their minds and bodies and pray for matchmaking while surrounded by the spiritual atmosphere of the mountain.

Access

Access in about 25 minutes by car from Shonai Asahi IC!
When accessing the pagoda of Hagurosan by public transportation, take the Shonai Kotsu bus bound for Hagurosan Summit/Mt. Gassan 8th Station from JR Tsuruoka Station, and get off at Haguro Center Bus Stop after about 40 minutes. It's about a 15-minute walk from there. If you're driving, you can take National Route 112 via Shonai Asahi IC on the Yamagata Expressway and arrive in about 25 minutes, covering about 11km. The access method to the pagoda of Hagurosan varies depending on the transportation method, but if you use public transportation, it's convenient to access from JR Tsuruoka Station, and if you use a car, you can access it relatively smoothly by passing through the main roads.
