Yuhirayama Yayama Palm Grove

The "Yonaha Maehama Yashi Grove" is a place where you can see a rare endemic species, the Yonaha Maehama Yashi, which only grows in certain parts of Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island. It is located in the northwest part of Ishigaki Island, close to the popular beach "Yonaha Maehama Beach," making it a recommended spot to visit. The vast grove is a sight to behold, and it's worth incorporating into your travel itinerary to experience the majestic natural beauty of Ishigaki Island beyond its famous beaches. However, please note that the grove is only accessible by foot, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

One of the characteristics of the Yaeyama palm tree is its height. Although the trunk is about 30cm thick, the tree can grow up to 25m tall. It's been called the "world's most beautiful palm tree" and is highly valued for its aesthetic appeal. The sight of tall palm trees spreading their leaves is just like a picture, and it's a great way to experience the tropical atmosphere. When you enter a group of palm trees, be sure to look up at the sky. The sight of the palm leaves covering the sky is also magnificent.

At the "Yonaha Maehama Palm Tree Grove" there is a promenade where you can take a leisurely stroll. It takes about 20 minutes to complete, even at a slow pace. There are many stairs along the way, and some parts of the wooden promenade can be slippery when wet or have protruding roots, so it's recommended to wear shoes that are easy to walk in and not slippery. Surround yourself with trees in a 360-degree view, and enjoy the atmosphere full of negative ions while listening to the sound of leaves rustling in the wind. However, depending on the season, there may be mosquitoes or insects, so it's recommended to use insect repellent spray or wear long sleeves for a comfortable experience.

The "Yonehara Yaeyama Palm Tree Grove" is recommended even on hot summer days. The grove is covered with tall Yaeyama palm trees, which provide a little relief from the heat and make it feel a bit cooler. On sunny days, you can also be healed by the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees. Additionally, next to the grove is "Parlor Papaya," which is known for its rich, additive-free handmade juice. As Ishigaki Island is very hot in the summer, why not take a break and visit the "Yonehara Yaeyama Palm Tree Grove"?

Adjacent to it is the "Satake Yaeyama Palm Memorial Hall," which we also recommend visiting. This memorial hall was built to honor the achievements of Mr. Toshihiko Satake, a world-renowned authority on palms, and features exhibits on Mr. Satake's life and palm-related displays. The must-see attraction is the rooftop observatory. In front of you, you can see Kabira Bay, one of Ishigaki Island's most scenic spots, and behind you, a grove of Yaeyama palms. There is also a monument inspired by Ishigaki City's butterfly, the Great Purple Admiral, making it a great spot for taking commemorative photos.
