東平と書いて「とうなる」と読みます。知らないとまず読めない地名です。東平地区は大正から昭和のはじめにかけて別子銅山の採鉱本部が置かれた場所で、巨大な城塞を思わせる貯鉱庫と索道停車場の跡が忽然と山中に現れることから「東洋のマチュピチュ」と呼ばれているそうです。ただ、これほどの見ごたえであるならば、地球の裏側にある関連性ゼロの遺跡を持ち出さずとも、住友財閥の屋台骨を支え続けた産業遺産としてアピールしたほうがわかりやすいと感じました。かつては鉱山施設のみならず、急斜面にずらりと社宅が並び、大浴場に娯楽施設もあって、鉱山そのものがひとつの街を成していました。遺構多くは失われて久しいものの、先に挙げた貯鉱庫をはじめとした堅牢な建物の跡が、かつての繁栄の名残をとどめています。多くの採掘場跡と同じく、ここもアクセスが良くはありません。端出場地区のマイントピア別子までは路線バスが運行されているものの、その先の公共交通機関はタクシーしかありません。マイントピア別子からガイド付きツアーのシャトルバスが一一時と一三時に運行されているものの、東平地区の魅力を堪能し尽くすには滞在時間が十分とは言えません。ネット等での予習で代替可能なガイドさんの説明をありがたく拝聴するより、ここでしかできない産業遺産の鑑賞に時間をあてるのが合理的と考えます。ツアーであってもバスの到着から出発までは自由行動なので、自分なりの楽しみ方を追求してください。

銅山跡の産業遺産。冬場は雪のため道路が閉鎖されていて来られませんでしたので、再チャレンジで夏にやってきました。東洋のマチュピチュというほどではないですが、十分に興味深い場所。廃墟や産業遺産が好きな方にはたまらないと思います。屋久島の山奥の林業の街の廃墟と同じ雰囲気を感じました。朝早くに参りましたので、ゆっくりとみてまわりました。貯鉱庫の近くの大きな駐車場から、第三通洞や第三変電所のあたりまで行って帰って、貯鉱庫などに行って1.5時間程度でした。

8月に利用しました。バスは家族で利用すると結構な金額になるので、自家用車で。 11時と13時にバスが出るということなので、バスの通過後の時間帯を狙って行きました。山に入ると狭いですが、すれ違えるように待避所がいくつか設定されていたので、確認しながらゆっくり登れば大丈夫そうです。確かにいくつか難所がありましたが、マイクロバスが通れるので、ゆっくりいけば問題ないでしょう。バスはガイドさんが付いていて安全。しかし、時間制限がある。自家用車は、道中の緊張があるが、時間は自由。それぞれ良いところがあります。駐車場から少し登ったところにある「東平マイン工房」もおすすめ。銅板で作った栞などが購入できます。もくもくと作業されていますし、体験もできるらしい。２時間くらい所要時間が必要なので、地元の方ぐらいしか体験しないとのこと。遺跡はもちろんのこと、歴史資料館も見応えありますよ。おすすめです。トイレも自販機もあります。帰りに野生の猿に遭遇しました。珍しいと思い、車を停めたところ、敵意剥き出しで車に突進してきました。お気をつけ下さい。
