Shimanami's top viewpoint
Kameyama is located on Oshima Island, which is crossed by one bridge from Imabari City. The observation park at the summit is one of the best viewpoints in the Shimanami area, and the view of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, which connects Imabari City and Oshima Island, is superb! On a clear day, you can even see Mt. Ishizuchi, the highest peak in western Japan.

Highlights

Point 1

Park with a View of the Shimanami Kaido

Kameyama Observatory Park with a View of the Shimanami Kaido
The Kametoyo Observatory is a tourist spot where you can view the Seto Inland Sea and the Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge that connects Oshima and Imabari on the Shimanami Kaido. The contrast between Oshima, the sea, and the bridge makes for a picturesque view. On clear days with crisp air, you can also see Mt. Ishizuchi, the highest peak in western Japan. The observatory is located at an altitude of 301.1 meters, so you can enjoy views farther than you might expect.
Point 2

A Must-See Building for Fans of Kengo Kuma

Kameyama Observatory A Must-See Building for Fans of Kengo Kuma
The observation deck was designed by the famous architect Kengo Kuma, making it a must-see spot for fans of his work. It's known as the "invisible architecture" because it was originally a cut made horizontally near the mountaintop to create an observation deck, which was then restored to its original form with the deck buried inside. As a result, it blends in with the surrounding landscape and is called the "invisible architecture." The interior features a gentle staircase, making it easy to climb up!
Point 3

Greeted by a Turtle, the Namesake of the Observation Deck

Kameyama Observatory Greeted by a Turtle, the Namesake of the Observation Deck
Next to the souvenir shop located between the observation deck and the parking lot, there is a large turtle statue that is the namesake of the Kamerayama Observation Deck. Legend has it that 1300 years ago, a traveling monk carrying a golden statue of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, found a large turtle and later built seven temples on a nearby mountain to worship the statue, which was then named Kamerayama. Turtles are symbols of longevity and wisdom, so it seems there may be some blessings to be had from seeing it.
Point 4

Enjoy Different Views with Sunsets and Illumination

Kameyama Observatory Enjoy Different Views with Sunsets and Illumination
Depending on the season and time of day, you can enjoy sunsets and illumination. While you can see sunsets every day, regardless of the time of day, illumination is different. In fact, the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge is illuminated about 50 times a year. The "Honshu Highway" website has a "Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge Illumination Schedule" listed, so if you want to see the illumination, it's recommended to check in advance before going!
Point 5

Try the Famous Seaweed Salt Ice Cream at the Shop

Kameyama Observatory Try the Famous Seaweed Salt Ice Cream at the Shop
At Kametoroyama Observation Park near the observation deck parking lot, you can enjoy handmade ice cream made with 100% natural fruit juice at the shop. They offer classic flavors like vanilla and chocolate chip, as well as seasonal limited-time flavors, but the most famous is the "seaweed salt" ice cream. Made with natural salt that is carefully prepared, this ice cream has a perfect harmony with the ice cream and a taste that will make you addicted to its sweet and salty flavor. Enjoy the homemade ice cream while admiring the scenery, it's the best!

Access

Kameyama Observatory Recommended Access by Car
Recommended Access by Car
Kameyama Observatory is located at the southern end of Oshima Island on the Shimanami Kaido, making access by means other than car difficult. It takes about 15 minutes from the Oshima IC on the Honshu side and about 10 minutes from the Oshima Minami IC on the Imabari side by car to reach the observatory. The view is also great, so it feels good to drive there. For those cycling on the Shimanami Kaido who are confident in their physical abilities, it may be worth trying to cycle there, but be prepared as it's a hill climb!
