While it's nice to relax at a ryokan during the day, why not participate in events that allow you to learn more deeply about the local area and experience it if you've come all the way to Iwamuro? In the "Mase Copper Mine Tour," you can learn about the history of the Mase Copper Mine and the wildflowers that grow there while listening to the guide's explanation. In the "Sasadango Handmade Experience," you can try making the Niigata specialty sasadango using the traditional method of the Iwamuro district. Since the events held vary depending on the season, those visiting Iwamuro Onsen should contact the tourism association for more information.

Autumn Festival: Enjoy the Straw Art Festival

In the Nishikawa area of Niigata City, where Iwamuro Onsen is located, the "Straw Art Festival" is held from the end of August to early October. Various art works using rice straw are displayed, and many people from both inside and outside Niigata City visit every year. The rice straw used in the straw art works is collected from elementary schools in the former five towns and villages (Makimachi, Nishikawamachi, Iwamuramura, Katagamimura, and Nakanokuchimura) that have merged. Using this rice straw, students from Musashino Art University and other schools create rice straw art.

Farmers' Exchange Restaurant Twice a Month!

Twice a month (on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays), the "Farmers' Exchange Restaurant Yasai no Heya" will open in a traditional Japanese house located in Iwamuro Onsen. Local farmers will provide dishes made with ingredients they have grown themselves. The basic lunch menu consists of "rice balls, miso soup, a main dish, a side dish, a small dish, a condiment, a dessert, and tea." Local dishes from Niigata City may also be served. If you happen to be in Iwamuro Onsen on the 2nd or 4th Tuesday of the month, be sure to visit.

Access

Only an Hour's Drive from Niigata City!
Iwamuro Onsen is the only hot spring town in Niigata City and has good access from the city center. It's located within an hour's drive from Niigata Station. If you're coming by car, get off at the "Makigata Higashi IC" on the Hokuriku Expressway. If you're using public transportation, take the shinkansen or train to Niigata Station or Tsubame-Sanjo Station, and then take a direct taxi to Iwamuro Onsen. The "Niigata West Coast Liner" is a reservation-only shared taxi that can take you directly from Niigata Station or Niigata Airport to Iwamuro Onsen.

Take a Leisurely Stroll around the Hot Springs!
The area around Iwamuro Onsen is a peaceful mix of nature and residential neighborhoods. You can spend a quiet time at temples such as Shugetsu-ji and Seiryu-ji, or experience the rural Japanese countryside at Yunosato Park. At the Iwamuroya tourist facility in Niigata City, you can also learn about the history of the Nishikam district, which developed around the hot spring town. Not only for Iwamuro Onsen, but you may also be able to learn about tourist information from the surrounding cities and towns from the locals, who may tell you about hidden spots that are not often visited by tourists.

Get Niigata's Famous Bamboo Leaf Rice Cake as a Souvenir!
In the Iwamuro Onsen area, there are several small Japanese sweet shops that are unique to hot spring towns. "Kadoya Etsudo" is famous for its hot spring manju and kintsuba sweets. They also sell Niigata's famous bamboo leaf rice cake, so be sure to stop by when you're feeling peckish. "Iwamuro Seika" is also famous for its Iwamuro senbei, which is a type of crispy rice cracker. The outside is crispy, while the inside is soft and warm with the sweetness of wheat flour spreading throughout your mouth.
