History

Japanese Garden Landscaped 100 Years Ago
Matsuunoyamaso is one of the famous Japanese gardens of its time, landscaped by the gardener Ren'ichi Hasuike and his son in Kashiwazaki Higashimachi, starting in 1926 (Taisho 15), at the behest of Kensaburo Iizuka, founder of Kashiwazaki Gas Company. This was Iizuka's former residence. The garden was landscaped based on a six-panel folding screen painting by the artist Takeuchi Seihō. The approximately 2,900 square meter garden features 350 azaleas, 1,650 rhododendrons, 600 Japanese maples, and 200 red pines, as well as lanterns, stone monuments, a drum bridge, and a pond. This charming garden was named by former Prime Minister Keigo Kiyoura.
