The statue of Amida Nyorai in the main hall soothes the hearts of those who see it, and several interesting festivals are held throughout the year. During the first three days of the New Year, the "Sansha Festival" is held on the approach to celebrate the beginning of the year. There is also the "Mizuage Festival," where people pray for a good harvest, safety in the home, and prosperity in business. Additionally, once every seven years, there is the "Gokaicho" where you can see the appearance of the main statue, which is usually located in the back of the main hall and cannot be seen. Please come and enjoy the profound world of Zenkoji Temple.

Zenkoji Nakamise Street is lined with souvenir shops and restaurants. Here, we recommend trying local snacks such as "Shinshu soba" and "oyaki". If you're staying overnight, there's also a "shukubo" where you can experience lodging at a temple. Staying overnight while feeling the atmosphere of morning services and the temple is one of the highlights of Zenkoji tourism. Access

Access and Recommended Route to Zenkoji Temple
Access and Recommended Route to Zenkoji Temple
Here's a guide on how to access Zenkoji Temple. If you're coming from another prefecture, you can get off at Nagano Station on the JR Hokuriku Shinkansen. There are trains, buses, and taxis available from Nagano Station, but during peak tourist season, expect congestion. Therefore, it's important to allow for extra time depending on your mode of transportation. One recommended access method is the access bus from Nagano Station, which is reasonably priced and convenient as it's only a 10-minute walk from the Zenkoji-mae bus stop. Walking is also an option, and the route from Zenkoji-mae Station is perfect for a 20-minute stroll through the beautiful town. There are also rental bicycle and car shops around Zenkoji Temple, allowing you to move around while sightseeing. There are several courses for accessing the temple, but the "Autumn Leaves Tour Course" around the temple lodgings from Zenkoji-mae is particularly recommended. By enjoying the autumn leaves of Zenkoji while touring the temple lodgings, you can experience the charm of Zenkoji even more.

History

The History of Zenkoji, a Place of Worship since Ancient Times
The origin of Zenkoji dates back to the Kamakura period in the late 12th century. At that time, a small temple near present-day Nagano City became the predecessor of Zenkoji. Later, during the medieval period, Zenkoji received protection from the Kamakura and Muromachi shogunates, and it grew significantly. In particular, the creation of the sacred statue of Amida Nyorai, the object of worship, spread the fame of Zenkoji. In the Edo period, the Nakasendo pilgrimage route was established, leading to an increase in the number of pilgrims visiting Zenkoji. Due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism policy after the Meiji Restoration, Zenkoji was temporarily abandoned. However, it was revived in the Showa period and has become a beloved temple for many people to this day.
