Goutokuji Temple in Setagaya Ward is a historic tourist spot known as the birthplace of the maneki-neko (beckoning cat). The temple enshrines a beckoning cat with its right paw raised, which is said to have originated from a story about Naosuke Ii seeking shelter from a thunderstorm. The temple grounds are full of attractions, including over 1,000 beckoning cats of various sizes, a beautiful garden, and important cultural properties. There is also the tomb of Naosuke Ii, a prominent figure who played a key role in opening Japan to the world.
