Edo's two famous gardens, Rikugien

It was born out of an attempt to recreate the waka poems of the Kokin Wakashu as a garden. You can enjoy various seasons of nature such as weeping cherry blossoms and azaleas, and spend a relaxing time in the city.

History

A Garden Created During the Edo Period by the Fifth Shogun
Rikugien Garden was created in 1695 by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, who was a chamberlain at the time and received the land in Komagome as a lower residence from the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. Over the course of seven years, Yanagisawa himself designed and directed the creation of a "strolling-style mountain retreat and pond garden" by digging a pond and building a mountain in a flat corner of Musashino. Since its creation, it has been counted as one of the two major gardens in Edo along with Koishikawa Korakuen Garden. At the time, it was a private residence and not open to the public, but in 1938 it was donated to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and opened to the public.
