During the Edo period, it was deeply believed by the Tokugawa shogunate as a way to ensure the prosperity of their family and descendants. Myogi Shrine has many attractions, such as the sacred tree, the inner sanctuary, the main hall, and the worship hall located within the precincts. Moreover, there is a pond with swimming carp just past the torii gate, which adds to the atmosphere. In addition, the surrounding area of Myogi Shrine is rich in nature, including Mt. Myogi, and is popular as a base for mountain climbing and hiking. In the autumn when the leaves of Mt. Myogi turn red, the shrine is illuminated, creating a fantastic scenery. 上毛三山の一つで妙義山を御神体とする古社。本殿・幣殿・拝殿（３殿で一括指定）、総門、唐門が重要文化財の指定を受けている。本殿と拝殿は日光東照宮と同じ権現造りで、二殿が一体となっている。豪華絢爛たる装飾が目を惹く。この神社も明治初期の神仏分離令以前は神仏習合の施設であり、石堂寺という別当寺の管理下にあった。現在の総門は元は石堂寺の「仁王門」であり、今でも一対の仁王像が安置されている。上毛三山の中では境内が最も開放的かつ広大で、整備が行き届いている。神社ではなく寺なのではないかと錯覚しそうだが、江戸時代までは実質的に寺院なのである。現代人は寺と神社を区別してイメージしてしまうが、昔の人にはそんな区別など全く意味をなさなかった。明治の神仏分離令は偏執的なイデオロギーによって日本古来の宗教観、信仰形態を暴力的に破壊してしまったと言える。本殿前の石段は急傾斜の１６５段！足に自信のない方は楽な迂回路（参拝客は主に下りに使っている）があるから、そちらから登った方が良い。少し遠回りになるが足への負担は格段に少ない。

６年振りに来ました。今回は目的が別にあって来ましたが、周りに漂う雰囲気、建造物の華麗さ、豪華さに感動しました。目的は果たせず、また時間をおいて来ようと思います。途中で目的は二の次三の次だと思うようになりました。目的というのは、私の地元安中市の偉人で、和算の大家、岩井重遠という人がいて、その人は、妙義神社をはじめ水沢観世音、高崎八幡八幡宮、高崎清水観音、碓氷峠熊野神社等に算額を奉納していて、それを見るためでした。算額とは、和算家が自己の作った数学の問題や解答を書いて、神社、寺院等に奉納した絵馬、額面題のことをいいます。有名な算額は、多くは、県並びに市の重要文化財に指定されています。大切に保管、保存されていて通常目にできることは少ないのですが、万が一もしかして、もしかして見られるかもしれないとお邪魔したわけです。隅から隅まで節穴の目で見つけましたが、見つからず、社務所の人に聞いてみようかと思いましたが、次来る楽しみがなくなると嫌だな、と思い止めました。ご存知かもしれませんが、和算のレベルは物凄く高くて、微分積分に関しては、ニュートンやライプニッツよりも早くその概念を解き明かしました。微分積分って何？高校時代、「微かに分かった積り」の理論ってうそぶいていていませんでしたか?それはさておき、肝心な目的は横において神社を見て廻る羽目に陥りました。また次に来る日を楽しみにしたいと思います。なお、神社近くに道の駅みょうぎがあり、その駐車場が利用できます。無料ですし、お土産を買ってくださいね、のアピールもありません。私が行った時は、県内ナンバーより県外ナンバーがずっと多く、知名度は全国的だと感動しました。途中のところまで車で行けます。駐車場代金は一日100円だったかな。

かなりの年期を感じる神社。訪問者は誰も居ず、掃除のおじさん1人いただけ。朝イチにもかかわらずこちらから挨拶しないととは…お寺とは違うのかな。まあ、ほっといて先へ進む。口コミにもあったが装飾が日光東照宮的で美しい。水神ということで大抵は龍の口から水が出ているが、なぜかここは狛狗… あえて昔のままを維持管理しているとのことだったが、特に石段は急勾配かつ歪みがひどく、手すりもないためDANGER＆ハード！運動不足から、ふきらはぎが筋肉痛になった！石段を登りきり門をくぐった後振りむいてみると、いい景色が拝めた。本殿の装飾もまた素晴らしい。なにか御利益があるといいかな。いい運動不足解消の一部にはなったかな（笑）
