The remains of a Jomon period village that existed 5,500 years ago. About 2,000 excavated items have been designated as important cultural properties. There are many attractions, such as the "Jomon Jiyukan" where you can learn about the life of the Jomon people, and restored pit dwellings. You can also experience making magatama beads and clay figurines.

The Sannai-Maruyama Ruins is a Jomon period village ruin located in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture. In 2021, it was registered as a World Heritage site under the name "Jomon Archaeological Sites in Hokkaido, Northern Tohoku, and other regions". Within the ruins, you can see many remains of pit dwellings, post-and-beam buildings, embankments, adult and child graves, as well as a large amount of pottery, stone tools, valuable wooden products, bone and horn products, and more, allowing you to learn about Jomon period culture and life. Take a stroll through the ruins and feel the breath of the Jomon period.

At the museum located within the Sannai-Maruyama site, you can learn in detail about life during the Jomon period. There are exhibits of life-sized Jomon houses, as well as displays of Jomon food and crafts, allowing you to experience life during the Jomon period. In addition, tools and decorations used by people during the Jomon period are also on display, giving you a glimpse into their way of life. Furthermore, Jomon pottery shards have been restored, providing insight into the cooking and stewing practices of the Jomon period.

The museum holds workshops where you can experience multiple crafts from the Jomon period every day it's open. You can start right away on the day of your visit, but for groups of 10 or more, advance reservations are necessary. The maximum number of people per group is 100. Even children can enjoy making "mini Jomon figurines" out of clay. The required time is 50 minutes, and the cost is 330 yen. Be sure to check out each workshop on the official website.

At the Sannai-Maruyama Site, in addition to the usual experiential corners and exhibits, there are events held about once a month where you can study and experience the Jomon period in depth. In the "Sanmaru Jomon Forehead Course," you can learn deeply about the Jomon period by focusing on specific themes such as the spiritual culture of the Jomon period and the cylindrical pottery culture of Hokkaido. There are also experiences where you can make dogu (clay figurines) and pottery, which even small children can enjoy.

At "Restaurant Gosenen no Hoshi," dishes made with ingredients that the Jomon people would have eaten are served. Enjoy special Jomon cuisine that can't be tasted at other archaeological sites! Please note that the last order is at 2:30 pm and the restaurant closes at 3 pm, so those who want to go to the restaurant should be mindful of the time!

Required time

Enjoyable for Half a Day with Just Exhibits!
The Sannai-Maruyama Ruins have many attractions, and if you want to enjoy all the exhibits and experiences, you'll need a full day. However, if you only want to stroll around the ruins, you can enjoy it in about two hours, so those with limited time should enjoy the outdoor ruins such as the pit dwellings. On the other hand, if you want to enjoy gourmet food, exhibits, and experience programs, it's recommended to allocate more than a day.

Access

Convenient "Nebutan-go" from the Station
For those traveling by car, it's about a 5-minute drive from the Aomori IC exit on the Tohoku Expressway. If you're taking the shinkansen or train, it's about a 40-minute ride on the tourist shuttle bus "Nebutan-go" from Aomori Station or Shin-Aomori Station. Additionally, there is also a city bus from Aomori Station bound for "Sannai-Maruyama Site," so please use the bus that best suits your schedule.

Fee

Get a Great Deal with Mutual Discounts at the Aomori Museum of Art!
Admission fees are 410 yen for adults, 200 yen for high school and university students, and free for junior high school students and younger. For groups of 20 or more, the fees are 330 yen for adults and 160 yen for high school and university students. In addition, admission fees may be reduced for school trips or group visits from care facilities. Mutual discounts are also available with the Aomori Museum of Art. Present a valid ticket stub from the Aomori Museum of Art on the day of your visit and receive a discount, with fees reduced from 410 yen to 330 yen for adults and from 200 yen to 160 yen for high school and university students.
