The Matsushita Village School in Odate City is the fourth historic school in Japan built by Yoshiiroku Takemura with his own funds. It's also known as a place visited by Yoshida Shoin and where Ryoji Kano's "San-Saku" was published. It was built with the hope of promoting local education and culture and sending young people to become excellent educators or to soar in the world. It has since been relocated to the library and is available for free tours.
