This castle, built in the 13th year of the Keicho era, towers over a small hill facing the sea and is known as the "floating castle on the sea" due to its appearance. The view from the observation deck inside the castle is magnificent, offering a panoramic view of Matsuura Lagoon, Niji no Matsubara, and the islands floating in the sea.

Karatsu Castle was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi's vassal, Terazawa Hirotaka, and prospered as a castle town during the Edo period. Currently, a simulated main tower and a reconstructed watchtower have been built, and it is used as a tourist facility. Inside the main tower, there are exhibits about the history of Karatsu Castle and Karatsu pottery, making it a recommended spot for those interested in history and culture.

The access method to Karatsu Castle is about a 20-minute walk from JR Karatsu Station. It is also accessible by car, and parking is available. The convenience of direct access by subway from Hakata Station in about 2 hours is also attractive. There are also many accommodation facilities in the surrounding area of Karatsu City, making it convenient as a base for sightseeing!

Use the Convenient Parking Lot for Easy Access

There is a large parking lot right next to Karatsu Castle, called the Higashi-jo Uchi Parking Lot, which can accommodate about 190 regular-sized cars for a fee. The fee is 100 yen for up to one hour, 300 yen for one to two hours, and 400 yen for more than two hours. The night fee is a flat rate of 300 yen. Although the parking lot is paid, it's recommended because of its prime location right in front of the tourist spot.
