Cape Suzu and the Blue Cave

Suzu Cape, also known as the Sanctuary Cape, has recently gained a lot of attention as one of Japan's three major power spots, alongside Nagano Prefecture's Bunagatake Pass and Mt. Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture. The reason for its power is said to be due to the ocean currents. Suzu Cape is located at the point where the warm current from the south (Tsushima Current) and the cold current from the north (Liman Current) meet. The terrain where the currents from the north and south intersect is rare worldwide, and it is believed that there is "ki" or energy there.

At a height of 9.5 meters above a cliff, there is an aerial observation deck called the "Skybird," where you can enjoy the unique scenery of this area. As it is an aerial observation deck, the sea can be seen directly below, and those with a fear of heights may feel their legs go weak. The view of the open sea, unobstructed by anything around it, is dotted with rugged rocky outcrops, and it is a spectacular spot where you can experience the unique color and waves of the sea, where two ocean currents meet, up close.

To reach the Blue Cave, you need to take a walking path. This path winds up and down, and may be difficult to walk in heels or other shoes with heels. However, it's a pleasant walkway that allows you to feel the sea up close. The trees that have taken on a unique shape due to the sea breeze, and the seasonal flowers that bloom here and there, are also one of the attractions, giving you a sense of strolling through a garden. Along the way, you will be stopped by a pole with a sign that says "no entry," but you can enter by purchasing a ticket to the Blue Cave from the ticket machine and wearing the helmet that is rented out.

Descending a hill, you'll be greeted by a bright red entrance when you arrive at the entrance to the Blue Cave. The tunnel, which was carved out of the cliff, leads to the Blue Cave. You can experience the excitement of moving from the red world to the blue world. Previously, the cave was only accessible by boat and only guests of the "Yoshigaura Onsen Lamp no Yado" could visit. Thanks to the tunnel, anyone can now walk there from the surface.

The Aoi Blue Cave in Noto has a depth of about 100 meters and a height of about 20 meters. The entire cave is illuminated with blue light, shining brilliantly in shades of blue. While some may be disappointed by the artificial color, the unique atmosphere is very beautiful and soothing. Depending on the time of day, the reflection of the sea's light can make the cave appear to glow blue. At the back of the cave, there is a hollow leading to the sea, and one can imagine that ships once entered from here. On sunny days, sunlight shines through the hollow, and the high transparency of the seawater sparkles beautifully. This place is also known as the "hidden boat cave," and is said to be where Minamoto no Yoshitsune took refuge during his journey to Oshu when he was caught in a fierce storm. Enjoy the mystical atmosphere while reflecting on history.

As your eyes adjust to the blue light inside the cave, you'll begin to see Buddhist statues carved into the rocks and sitting atop them. In fact, the origin of the name "Noto" is said to be hidden within these statues. This cave is known as the place where a sage named Hodo, who came from India (then known as Tenjiku) in the second year of the Yoro era (712 AD), trained to ascend to heaven and acquire strong powers. It is said that after completing all that he needed to do in this world, Hodo ascended to the sky and to heaven. As time passed and a country was established in this area, the name "Noto" was given in reference to the story of Hodo ascending to heaven, with the name meaning "able to climb well" in Japanese. By gazing at the Buddhist statues with a calm mind, you may be able to feel the power of a distant era.
