Highlights

Point 1

Experience Uchiko Zabuton Puppetry for Yourself!

Uchiko-za Experience Uchiko Zabuton Puppetry for Yourself!
Every year in August, regular performances are held as an opportunity to experience Japan's traditional performing arts up close. Opportunities and locations to see such traditional performing arts are decreasing, but Uchiko Zabuton Puppetry is held not only for local residents but also for fans of puppetry from all over Japan. Since it's not something you can see anytime, those who want to see it should check the schedule in advance and visit!
Point 2

An Actual Stage that You Can Stand On

Uchiko-za An Actual Stage that You Can Stand On
On days when there are no events, you can actually stand on the stage and walk down the flower path! It's a fully equipped stage house, so you're sure to be impressed by all the little details. One feature of the stage that deserves special attention is the "revolving stage." The center of the stage is cut out in a circle, allowing it to rotate. This allows for scene changes using the revolving stage, and you can see how the directors of the time put a lot of effort into making the stage more effective. They even have happi coats available for commemorative photos, so let's make some memories!
Point 3

Explore the Space Called "Naraku"

Uchiko-za Explore the Space Called "Naraku"
At Uchikoza, you can visit a space called "Naraku" located underground. Naraku is a dark and damp space located under the stage and runway, and is so named because it evokes the image of hell. At the time, people were placed there to move actors or manually rotate the revolving stage. Even in summer, it's a cool space, so it's definitely one space you'll want to check out when you visit!
Point 4

Try sitting in the audience seats of that time

Uchiko-za Try sitting in the audience seats of that time
There are two main types of audience seats in the Uchiko-za theater. The first is called the "masu-seki," which is a square-shaped seat that is divided into four or six seats. (Have you seen it in a morning drama or something?) The second is called the "oomukou" seat, which is located on the second floor in front and is preferred by regular customers. You may have trouble deciding whether to watch the powerful stage up close from the masu-seki or to feel the overall atmosphere while sitting in the oomukou seat.
Point 5

Take Home Souvenirs and Make Memories

Inside the Uchiko-za theater, there is a merchandise corner, so be sure to stop by before you leave after touring the area. At this merchandise corner, you can find fans and paper files that utilize traditional techniques and industries from Uchiko town. Additionally, if you visit a nearby liquor store, you can purchase Uchiko-za limited edition sake, which is a stylish way to toast to memories of Uchiko-za at home.

History

Uchiko-za Experience a Theater Over 100 Years Old
Experience a Theater Over 100 Years Old
Uchiko-za is an authentic Japanese-style theater built in 1916 (the 5th year of the Taisho era) to celebrate the enthronement of Emperor Taisho. At a time when entertainment was scarce, Uchiko-za began with puppet theater performances. Although it was once on the verge of being demolished due to aging, local residents opposed the decision and it was decided to undergo renovation work. Today, it remains a beloved spot in the community.
