Highlights

A Natural Artwork Only Visible at Low Tide

Tatamiishi A Natural Artwork Only Visible at Low Tide
Located on Oku Island, which can be reached by crossing a bridge from Kume Island, "Tatami Rocks" is characterized by a landscape where rocks shaped like turtle shells, in pentagonal and hexagonal shapes, are laid out like tatami mats. At high tide, they are hidden in the beautiful turquoise blue sea, but at low tide, the mysterious tatami rocks appear as the tide recedes. Their beauty is truly a natural artwork created by nature! The view varies depending on the time of day, so it's a good idea to check the low tide time in advance and plan your visit accordingly.
Point 2

Rare Rocks Created by Nature

Tatamiishi Rare Rocks Created by Nature
Tatamiishi is a rare rock created by nature, known for being made of andesitic lava that cooled and solidified during volcanic activity approximately 6 million years ago. There are over 1,000 of these rocks, which are spread out over 50 meters north to south and 250 meters in length. The "columnar jointing" rocks are said to continue like pillars deep into the earth's strata. It's truly a miracle of natural history that will leave you moved and impressed.
Point 3

Fun for the Whole Family!

At low tide, you can see cute tropical fish, starfish, hermit crabs, and other creatures living in the water-filled crevices of the tatami rocks, making it a spot that even families with children can enjoy. Why not enjoy discovering and observing these creatures together with your children, feeling like you're on a treasure hunt? Right behind the area, there is "Badehaus Kumejima," where you can enjoy a warm water pool and spa, as well as the "Kumejima Sea Turtle Museum," where you can learn about ecology while interacting with sea turtles, making it perfect for a family trip.
