As a guardian shrine of the Byodoin Temple, this shrine is revered and is now a World Heritage Site. The main shrine was built in the Heian period, and the hall of worship was built in the Kamakura period, both of which were designated as national treasures. Point 1

Visit the Oldest Shinto Shrine Architecture in Japan!

The main shrine of Ujigami Shrine is known as the oldest existing Shinto shrine architecture in Japan. Built in the mid-Heian period, this building is also designated as a World Heritage Site and is a must-see for history lovers. In addition, the worship hall, designated as a national treasure, uses Japanese cypress that was felled in the early Kamakura period. Both buildings are valuable places where you can feel the history of Japan.

Enjoy Spring at a Cherry Blossom Spot!

The area around Uji-Kami Shrine is also famous as a cherry blossom spot. Somei Yoshino cherry trees are planted along the approach, and cherry blossoms add color to the vermilion torii gate. In addition, various types of cherry blossoms bloom in the park next to the Uji River, so you can enjoy a cherry blossom viewing walk. There are also early-blooming cold scarlet cherry trees planted, making it a wonderful place where you can feel the arrival of spring relatively early.

Near Ujigami Shrine, there is the equally world-renowned Byodoin Phoenix Hall, which is also a registered World Heritage Site. The hall, also known as the building depicted on the 10 yen coin, is characterized by its roof adorned with phoenixes. It is a popular power spot visited by many tourists every day, and by visiting it along with Ujigami Shrine, you can deepen your knowledge of the history and culture of Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture.

Stamp Your Goshuincho as a Souvenir!

At Uji-Kami Shrine, you can receive a goshuin, a stamp with the shrine's seal, in your goshuincho, a book for collecting such stamps. This is one of Japan's traditional cultural practices. Admission to the shrine is free, but receiving a goshuin costs 500 yen. Be sure to stamp your goshuincho as a memorable souvenir. It's recommended to leave your goshuincho at the shrine office before visiting, as it will make your sightseeing more efficient.

Popular Spot within Walking Distance from the Nearest Station

Ujigami Shrine is a power spot that is also registered as a World Heritage Site. It's located within a 10-minute walk from either Uji station on the Keihan Uji line or Uji station on the JR Nara line, making it easily accessible by public transportation. For those coming by car, the shrine also has a fully equipped parking lot. Additionally, the shrine is wheelchair accessible, and visitors in wheelchairs can even reach the main hall, so please come and visit.

2024年8月20日、午前中訪問宇治市、京阪宇治駅に近い宇治川からも近い所にある神社当日は京阪宇治駅から宇治川沿いに歩き、宇治神社の手前から坂を登り着きやしたよ鳥居のある参道はとても広く緑が綺麗でしたさて境内に入ると大きな拝殿がありその右手には手水舎？がありそちらの屋根の下の泉から桐原水という名水が豊かに湧き出てやす本殿も急な階段の上に立つ独特の建物で御神木もとても大きく見事やったさあ🌲

朝イチに鳳凰堂近くの駐車場に車を停めて、鳳凰堂、放生院（橋寺）、ミュージアム、と順に回ってたどり着きました。失礼ながら、世界遺産とは知らずに参拝したので、驚きました。本殿は、平安時代後期の木材が使われ、日本最古の神社建築みたいで、大変歴史ある神社でした。１２時頃に参拝した為に、たくさんの参拝者がいました。うさぎのおみくじや、お守り等もありました。

【宇治上(うじがみ)神社】2024.8.12㈪㈷平等院と同じ世界遺産ということで平等院の帰りに寄らせてもらいました。平成６年に神社全域が世界文化遺産に登録され、本殿と拝殿は神社建築として最古であることから国宝に指定されています。珍しかったのが境内手水舎が通常とは異なり、「宇治七名水」のうち唯一現存する名水「桐原水(きりはらすい)」が湧いていて、それを汲んで手を清める様になっていた事です。冷たくて気持ち良かったです！飲用水としては使用できません。でも世界遺産の神社としては参拝者が少ないと思いました！御朱印は９種類ほどあり、直書き、書き置き、和歌御朱印、夏季限定御朱印など５００円〜８００円ほどで、日付が入るものと入らないものがあります。私は和歌御朱印(８００円、日付なし、写真あり)を頂きました。無料の専用駐車場(宇治では珍しい)はありますが京阪宇治駅から神社までの石畳の道は狭くて対向車に注意しないといけません。鳥居をくぐって突き当たった神社の左手に駐車場(約１５台ほど)があります。
