History

Learn about the History of Lake Biwa Shrine
Lake Biwa Shrine is located in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture and its history dates back to the Showa period. Lake Biwa Shrine was built in 1933 to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the compilation of Japan's oldest history book, the "Nihon Shoki". The shrine's main deity is Emperor Suinin, the 10th emperor who is said to have unified the country for the first time according to the "Nihon Shoki". The shrine celebrates the completion of the "Nihon Shoki", which he supervised, and plays a role in passing on ancient culture to future generations. The architectural style of Lake Biwa Shrine is modeled after ancient court architecture, and its appearance symbolizes the establishment of Japan's first unified nation. Many tourists visit the shrine for its beauty and historical significance. Additionally, this shrine is also known for the traditional event called "Omi Jingu Ryu Kagura" held every June. This Kagura is based on the ancient court music called "Gagaku" and is a part of Japan's traditional music.
