Kawayu Onsen

At Kawayu Onsen, there is a "footbath" that can be used for free. The pavilion-style building, surrounded by trees, has a roof and benches, allowing you to enjoy the footbath regardless of the weather. The temperature of the hot spring varies depending on the season, so you can experience a hot footbath in the summer. Please note that towels and other items are not available for rent, so please bring your own.

Kawayu Shrine is located in the Kawayu Onsen area and enshrines three deities: Amaterasu Omikami, Toyotama-hime no Mikoto, and Sukunahikona no Mikoto. Founded in 1887, it is a historic shrine that has been in existence to this day. One of its unique features is the use of hot spring water for the purification water used before entering the shrine. This is a spot that Goshuin stamp collectors will definitely want to visit, as you can obtain a powerful and beautifully written stamp here.

The town of Shibetsu is famous as the place where the 48th Yokozuna, Taiho, spent his childhood, and the "Sumo Memorial Hall" that honors his achievements has become a popular tourist spot. Inside the hall, various items are on display, such as photos of his childhood, championship cups, and photos of past Yokozuna. Additionally, movies featuring famous sumo matches that have gone down in history are also screened. Admission fees are 420 yen for adults and 200 yen for children, making it a reasonably priced spot that even non-sumo fans will want to visit at least once.

If you come to Kawayu Onsen, the first place you should visit is the "Kawayu Visitor Center". The warm building, which features abundant use of wood, is located at the entrance of the Akaezo-matsu forest, which also serves as a hiking trail. Inside the center, there are exhibition corners that introduce the history and biology of the flora and fauna around Lake Kussharo, as well as a library where you can learn about nature. Additionally, there is a cafe where you can take a break during your sightseeing.

At Kawayu Onsen's "Kawayu Kanko Hotel," there is an area on the first floor called "Natsukashi Yokochi Roji," where you can buy dagashi (cheap sweets). The inside of the hotel has a Showa retro atmosphere, and you can feel a sense of nostalgia. It's a popular spot where adults can also enjoy themselves, as there are many nostalgic snacks from the past available for purchase. It's open from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, so be sure to visit before or after dinner.
