Sumiyoshi Shrine in Fukuoka City (Chikuzen Kokubun-ji) is Japan's first Sumiyoshi Shrine, a power spot for praying for safe navigation and abundant fishing. Ancient sumo wrestler statues and sacred trees are scattered throughout the forested area, purifying the mind and body. The profoundness of the shrine can also be seen from its vermilion-painted hall, rebuilt by Nagamasa Kuroda, and its status as the oldest among 2,300 shrines nationwide.
