Gujo's most beautiful mountain castle that conveys its history to the present day.
Gujo Hachiman Castle was demolished by the Meiji government's castle abolition order. After some time had passed, a wooden replica of the castle tower was rebuilt. It is now the oldest wooden reconstruction in Japan, and continues to watch over the castle town of Gujo Hachiman with a dignified appearance.

Highlights

Point 1

See Japan's Oldest Wooden Reconstructed Castle Tower

Gujo Hachiman Castle See Japan's Oldest Wooden Reconstructed Castle Tower
Gujo Hachiman Castle is a historic castle with Japan's oldest wooden reconstructed castle tower. The simulated tower, rebuilt in 1933, offers a beautiful view of the small but picturesque castle town. It has been praised by author Ryotaro Shiba as "the most beautiful mountain castle in Japan." Inside the castle, there are statues of the lord of the castle, Itohoshiyuki, and his wife, Chiyoko, adding to the historical value of the site. Be sure to visit Gujo City and see it for yourself.
Point 2

Visit the Gujo Hachiman Museum in conjunction with the castle tour

Gujo Hachiman Castle Visit the Gujo Hachiman Museum in conjunction with the castle tour
When visiting Gujo Hachiman Castle, it's recommended to also visit the Gujo Hachiman Museum. This building is a museum that utilizes the former tax office building, which was built in 1920, and retains its original appearance. The retro atmosphere of the building is lovely. The museum provides an easy-to-understand introduction to the charm of Gujo Hachiman, so visiting together will deepen your understanding and satisfaction is guaranteed!
Point 3

Enjoy the Autumn Foliage Illumination

Gujo Hachiman Castle Enjoy the Autumn Foliage Illumination
During the autumn foliage season around November, Gunjo Hachiman Castle is sometimes illuminated at night. The combination of the brilliantly colored autumn leaves and the illuminated castle is undoubtedly beautiful. The castle town at night is also fantastic and beautiful, allowing you to enjoy a romantic atmosphere. When you visit, be sure to check the official website for illumination information.
Point 4

Get a Golden Seal Stamp

Gujo Hachiman Castle Get a Golden Seal Stamp
At Gujo Hachiman Castle, a "Golden Castle Seal Stamp" is issued on the last Friday of every month (Premium Friday). The cool font is written on a shiny golden family crest, making it a great souvenir to remember your visit. It's usually issued on the last Friday of every month, but it may also be issued on Castle Day (4/6) or somewhere during Golden Week. It costs 300 yen, so be sure to get one!
Point 5

Explore the Surrounding Area with a Stamp Rally

Gujo Hachiman Castle Explore the Surrounding Area with a Stamp Rally
Around Gunjo Hachiman Castle, there are many stamp rally spots for Goshuin (a stamp book for collecting seals from temples and shrines) in Mino-Kamo and Gujo. There are many temples and shrines such as Seki Zenkoji Temple, Nichiryuhoji Temple, Oyada Shrine, Koyama Temple, and Jiongokoku Zen Temple. You can search for them on the internet's Goshuin book ranking or map, and it's fun to compare and see the differences after getting the golden Goshuin at Gunjo Hachiman Castle and going around together.

History

Gujo Hachiman Castle See Japan's Oldest Wooden Reconstructed Castle
See Japan's Oldest Wooden Reconstructed Castle
In 1559, there was a battle over the control of Gujo, called the "Akataneyama Castle Battle," and the location of the camp set up by Morikazu Endo is where the current Gujo Hachiman Castle stands. A castle was built here, but in 1871, with the abolition of the feudal domains, the Gujo domain was abolished, and both Gujo Castle and Hachiman Castle were demolished, leaving only the stone walls. The current castle was built in 1933 as a simulated castle tower, based on the design of the Ogaki Castle! It is a valuable castle as it is made of rare wooden materials for a simulated castle tower and is the oldest surviving wooden reconstructed castle in Japan!

Access

Convenient Access by Car
If you are heading to Gujo Hachiman Castle by car, you can arrive in about 12 minutes from the Gujo Hachiman IC on the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway. While it's possible to get there by public transportation, the frequency of buses and trains is low, so it's more convenient to access by car. There are also ways to get there by taking a highway bus from Gifu or Nagoya or by taking the Nagaragawa Railway and getting off at "Gujo Hachiman Station," so find the method that suits you best.

Parking

For Those Who Are Not Good at Driving, Use the Parking Lot in Front
There are several parking lots at the top and bottom of the mountain, but the road to the top (Gujo Hachiman Castle parking lot, 25 cars free) is very narrow and winding, with many pedestrians, so it's recommended that those with large cars or those who are not good at driving park at the nearby park parking lot (10-minute walk to the castle, free) or the Castle Town Plaza parking lot (20-minute walk, fee required). During peak times, there may be restrictions on parking at the mountaintop or Castle Mountain Park parking lots, so be flexible and adapt accordingly!
