Tatsunokuchi is an area where Japan's only "stairway highway" exists. This section of National Route 339 is only for pedestrians and cannot be used by cars or motorcycles. The 388.2-meter-long stairway highway connects the entrance to Tatsunokuchi Lighthouse and Tatsunokuchi Fishing Port, and is listed in Aomori Prefecture's tourist information as a local tourist spot. The stairway highway has a height difference of about 70 meters, allowing you to quickly descend a scenic path, but the return climb may be a bit challenging. There is a surreal blue triangular sign in front of the stairs, and there are also national highway signs, boldly advertising its existence. In addition, there are many attractive spots around Tatsunokuchi, such as Tatsunokuchi Lighthouse and the former Okutani Ryokan where Dazai Osamu stayed. The Dazai Osamu Memorial Museum "Shayoukan" is a mansion built to honor the literary master Dazai Osamu. The building was constructed by Dazai's father, Tsushima Gen'emon, two years before Dazai was born in 1907, during the Meiji period. The mansion is a mix of Japanese and Western styles, with Aomori cypress used even in the rice storehouse, giving it a solid and heavy feel. It was named "Shayoukan" after Dazai Osamu's masterpiece "Shayou" and is now open to the public as Dazai Osamu's birthplace. The memorial is a large building surrounded by a thick red brick wall located about 300 meters from Kanagi Station on the Tsugaru Railway. The castle-like appearance, reminiscent of Dazai Osamu's family history, is impressive. Inside, there are exhibits of Dazai Osamu's works, materials, and his life, allowing visitors to touch upon his literary footsteps and life. A Breathtaking Cape Jutting Out into the Tsugaru Strait!
Ryūhō-zaki is a cape located in Sannokamigōri, Gaihama-machi, Higashitsugaru-gun, Aomori Prefecture, and is situated at the northernmost tip of the Tsugaru Peninsula. It is part of the Tsugaru National Park and is known as a cape jutting out into the Tsugaru Strait. Ryūhō-zaki is part of the Tsugaru National Park and extends along the coastal area from the northern part of the Tsugaru Peninsula to the border of Akita Prefecture. The surrounding area boasts beautiful natural landscapes such as Mount Shirakami, which is part of the Shirakami Mountains, Jūniko, which includes Aoi-ike and other lakes, the Bensei Wetlands, and Mount Iwaki. On clear days, you can see all the way to Hokkaido across the Tsugaru Strait. In addition, Ryūhō-zaki is the only "stairway national road" in Japan, and cars are not allowed to pass through. Accessing Tatsunokuchi
If you're using public transportation to get to Tatsunokuchi, first take the Ryoheisaki Lighthouse-bound bus from Gaikehama Town Bus Station, which is accessible from JR Mimitsu Station. Get off at the final stop, Ryoheisaki Lighthouse Bus Stop, after about a 30-minute ride. From the bus stop, you can reach Tatsunokuchi on foot. Please be aware of the bus schedule. If you're using a car, take National Route 280 and then National Route 339 from Aomori IC on the Tohoku Expressway. You'll arrive at Tatsunokuchi in about 1 hour and 40 minutes after driving about 71km. Please follow the road signs as you proceed.
