Highlights

Point 1

Enjoy the Beautiful Cherry Blossom Trees

Genbikei Enjoy the Beautiful Cherry Blossom Trees
At Gembikei Gorge, approximately 200 cherry blossom trees, including Somei Yoshino and Edohigan, grow and create a beautiful cherry blossom-lined road in the spring. The road extends for about 2 kilometers. In particular, from mid to late April, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom and it is the best time to see them. In the spring, the flow of the river is faster due to the melting snow, so it's also possible to enjoy a different view of Gembikei Gorge compared to summer and autumn.
Point 2

Try the Famous "Kakko Dango" Treat

If you visit Genbikyo Gorge, you must try the gourmet treat known as "Kakko Dango". At Kakko-ya, located on the Iwai River, a long rope is strung across to the opposite bank, with a basket hanging from it. By putting the fee into the basket and signaling, the basket is pulled up and returns with tea and dango (sweet dumplings) inside, providing a unique and interesting experience. The dango can be enjoyed as a souvenir, but it's also recommended to savor them with tea while taking in the scenery.

Additionally, at the hot spring inns, you can enjoy dishes made with ingredients from the Tohoku region, such as Sukiyaki with Maesawa beef and Fuka-hire seafood hot pot. In particular, the "Itsukushien" is famous for its hot springs that flow directly from the source. The open-air bath, which uses plenty of Hinoki cypress, and the large stone bath are popular among visitors.
