Yes there is a curfew at 10pm but it's not unreasonable. But this is something you learn when you check in. Beppu isn't a big city, nor is this a big hotel where you can come in and out wherever you want. This is a family run business ryokan. Staff was friendly who reminded us check in was at 3pm even though we arrived early. We simply drove into town for lunch and came back. There's nothing you really need to do beyond 10pm, no one needs to race home if you just plan accordingly for the day. I think it's ridiculous people think they can apply their own rules and expectations when you're going to a place like this. The ryokan is beautiful. The rooms are lovely with your own wooden bath in each room that is is semi outdoor. I love their toilets with all the seating warming/bidet functions. The traditional dinner and breakfast were amazing, I worried about not having enough to eat but that certainly was not a problem. I have tattoos but went into the public onsen at night so it wouldn't potentially bother other customers who are not comfortable. When we left, one of the staff was so attentive and didn't leave until we were drove safely away.
