The Shimada Museum of Art in Kumamoto City is a hidden gem located in a quiet residential area. It's a place where the culture of warriors from the medieval to the early modern periods comes alive. Of particular note are the portraits and sculptures of the legendary swordsman, Musashi Miyamoto. On display are his own ink paintings, copies of the Go Rin No Sho, and two swords that are said to have been used by him. In addition, the "Paper Colored Portrait of Musashi Miyamoto," which has been restored, beautifully revives the delicate brushwork and colors of the original painting from the Edo period. Each of these items weaves a story and invites visitors on a journey through time.
