Hot spring valley where you can see monkeys bathing

Jigokudani Monkey Park is located in an area that is covered in snow for almost one third of the year, and the sight of steam rising from hot springs throughout the area led ancient people to call it "Jigokudani" or "Hell's Valley". However, for the Japanese monkeys that have lived in the area since ancient times, it is a comfortable habitat. At Jigokudani Monkey Park, you can not only observe the ecology of Japanese monkeys, but also see them soaking in hot springs. It is now loved by people from all over the world and has also been given the nickname "Snow Monkeys".

However, you can actually observe the lives of the monkeys all year round, not just in winter. The monkeys are in the park from around 8-9am in the morning, living their lives as they please. Unlike zoo monkeys, there are not many places in Japan where you can catch a glimpse of the lives of monkeys living in nature. Why not go and see the monkeys living in harmony with the nature of Shiga Kogen, not just in winter?

Note that some roads are closed in winter

If you are driving to Jigokudani, please get off at "Shinshu Nakano IC" on the Joshinetsu Expressway. It takes about 3 hours from Tokyo. If you are using public transportation, take the Nagano Electric Railway from Nagano Station and get off at Yudanaka Station, then take a bus for 15 minutes to arrive. You can also use the express bus from Nagano Station to Shiga Kogen. In this case, it is a 35-minute walk from Shiga Kogen. Please note that from December 1st to March 31st, the road from Onsenji in Shibu Onsen to Jigokudani Parking Lot is closed. In winter, there are only private parking lots in the Kamibayashi Onsen area or a route that is about 2 kilometers walk from the nearest bus stop, "Snow Monkey Park". Since the number of parking lots is not so large, it is recommended to use public transportation.

Fee

Admission Fees: 800 yen for Adults and 400 yen for Children

The general admission fee applies to those 18 years and older. The general entrance fee is 800 yen. Groups of 20 or more are eligible for a discounted fee of 680 yen, and an annual passport costs 5000 yen. The annual passport is valid for one year from the date of purchase. The entrance fee for elementary to high school students is 400 yen. Groups of 20 or more are eligible for a discounted fee of 340 yen, and an annual passport costs 2500 yen. Those who have a disability certificate will receive a 50% discount for themselves only.

Parking

Parking from Shibu Onsen is 500 yen

The parking lot that can be used when coming from the Shibu Onsen area is paid (500 yen for regular cars). However, please note that this parking lot is closed during the winter season. It takes about a 15-minute walk from this parking lot to the Jigokudani Monkey Park. There is also a free parking lot in Kamishiro Onsen. It takes about 30 minutes on foot from this parking lot to the Jigokudani Monkey Park via the Yumichi promenade.
