History

The History of Nozawa Onsen
Nozawa Onsen has been carefully preserved through the system of "yugumi" (hot spring groups) that has been in place since the Edo period. The "sotoyu" (outdoor hot springs) that were nurtured by the bonds of this yugumi are a shared asset of the village and are 100% natural hot springs. In the communal bathhouses, both villagers and visiting guests can enjoy pleasant interactions. The time spent relaxing in the hot springs is the perfect moment to share the events of the day. At the main hot spring of Nozawa Onsen, the Yakushi Sanzon (three Buddhist statues) are enshrined, while at other hot springs, the Twelve Shogun are worshipped as guardians of the hot springs. As sacred beings that have been passed down since ancient times, they continue to protect the hot springs. Let's spend a blissful time in Nozawa Onsen, where a rich hot spring culture spreads.
