Entsu-ji (Soto sect)

Kuromon Gate at Ennouji Temple is a relocated temple gate that still bears bullet holes from the Battle of Ueno on July 4, 1868. At the time, Ennouji Temple became a battlefield and many buildings were burned down, but Kuromon Gate miraculously survived. Looking at Kuromon Gate, you can imagine the intense battle that took place at that time. It's a must-see for history buffs.

Entsu-ji Temple is known throughout Japan as a Zen temple where Ryokan, a famous monk, practiced for over ten years starting at the age of 22. Within the temple grounds, there is a building called "Ryokan-an," where Ryokan is said to have practiced. Additionally, there are stone monuments inscribed with poems written by Ryokan in the temple's garden. This temple is famous for its association with Ryokan and is recommended for literature fans.

The gardens of Entsu-ji Temple are magnificent, offering beautiful views for every season. In spring, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, while in summer, the lush greenery provides a refreshing atmosphere. The autumn foliage is stunning, and in winter, you can enjoy the snow-covered scenery. Strolling through the gardens will make you feel at one with nature.

Access to Entsu-ji Temple is possible by taking the JR Joban Line from Kita-Senju towards Nippori. It takes about 3 hours on the Marine Liner express train from Kita-Senju Station to JR Tamashima Station, but you can enjoy the rich natural scenery such as the sea and mountains during that time. From Tamashima Station, it takes about a 15-minute walk to reach Entsu-ji Temple. With convenient transportation access, you can easily visit the temple.
