Nakano Folk History Museum

The Nakano Ward Historical Folk Museum exhibits materials related to the history and culture of Nakano Ward. Exhibits include materials related to the history, culture, and folklore of Nakano Ward from the Edo period to the Showa period, as well as personal effects of famous people from Nakano Ward and traditional crafts from the area. There are also regularly changing special exhibitions. Descriptions of the exhibits are available in multiple languages, including Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean. Admission is free, and the museum is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (entry until 4:30 pm). The museum is closed on Mondays and the third Sunday of each month. Photography is not allowed inside the exhibition rooms, but you can freely take pictures of the exterior and gardens. Wheelchairs and strollers are available for loan inside the exhibition rooms. There is also a gift shop where you can purchase traditional crafts and souvenirs from Nakano Ward.

In the 2023 fiscal year, a special exhibition will be held at our facility using materials related to the Great Kanto Earthquake from our collection. The exhibition will introduce the damage caused by the earthquake and records of the damage mainly created immediately after the earthquake. The Great Kanto Earthquake was an earthquake that occurred on September 1, 1923, causing significant damage mainly in Tokyo. By learning about the situation at that time and the recovery process, you may see Tokyo today in a different light. Admission is free, and the opening hours are from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (admission until 4:30 pm). The facility is closed on Mondays and the third Sunday of each month.

In addition to exhibits, there are also tea rooms and gardens. The tea rooms are reproductions of Edo period tea rooms, while the gardens are reproductions of Edo period gardens. Tea ceremonies can be experienced in the tea rooms (reservation required), and in the gardens, you can enjoy seasonal flowers and landscapes. By visiting in conjunction with the exhibits, you can feel the culture and scenery of Nakano Ward from the Edo period to the present day. Admission is free, and the opening hours are from 9am to 5pm (entry until 4:30pm). Closed on Mondays and the third Sunday of each month.

As Nakano-ku Historical Folk Museum is located within Nakano-ku Tetsugakudo Park, you can visit it in conjunction with a park stroll. Tetsugakudo Park is also known as a cherry blossom viewing spot, with the cherry blossoms in full bloom in spring. In addition, there are ponds and small hills within the park, allowing you to take a stroll while feeling the beauty of nature. You can also visit the Yamazaki Family Garden and Tea House located within the park (limited to spring season). Admission is free.

Explanations of exhibits are available not only in Japanese, but also in English, Chinese, Korean, and other languages, making it easy for overseas travelers to understand the exhibits. In addition, wheelchairs and strollers are available for rent inside the exhibition room. The shop inside the exhibition room sells traditional crafts and souvenirs from Nakano Ward. Bringing in food and drinks is prohibited, but there are benches in the garden where you can bring your own lunch and enjoy a picnic. Admission is free.
