The history of Utsunomiya Futarayama Shrine is very ancient, and it is said to have been founded during the reign of Emperor Nintoku, who is famous for the Osenko burial mound. Located in the center of Utsunomiya City, the city developed around this shrine. The shrine's iron-made guardian dogs are also designated as important cultural properties by the government.

Beautiful Utsunomiya Futarayama Shrine with Cherry Blossoms and a Large Torii Gate

Utsunomiya Futarayama Shrine has various shrines and buildings of different sizes scattered throughout its grounds. Representative buildings include the main shrine, Kagura-den, Haiden, and the large torii gate. Of note is the large torii gate of Futarayama Shrine, which is known for its enormous size of 9.7 meters in height, 13.8 meters in width, and 90 centimeters in diameter of its pillars. In spring, the cherry blossoms in the grounds are in full bloom, making it possible to visit the shrine while enjoying the cherry blossoms. Passing through the large torii gate feels like entering a land of cherry blossoms.

The Chrysanthemum Water Festival at Utsunomiya Futarayama Shrine is an autumn festival held in late October. During the festival period, many stalls are set up on the shrine grounds, selling local gourmet food, souvenirs, and folk crafts. The Chrysanthemum Water Festival is a festival full of attractions, combining elements such as luxurious festival floats, portable shrines, dances, music, food stalls, and yabusame (horseback archery).
