Kan'non Temple

The Kan'non Temple enshrines the deified Chinese military commander from the Three Kingdoms period, Guan Yu, who became known as the Kan'non Saint. In the 1850s, Japan opened its doors to the world, and Yokohama, which developed into a major port city, welcomed many Chinese immigrants. In 1871, a full-fledged Chinese-style Kan'non Temple was built with donations from Chinese residents in the Kanto region. The first Kan'non Temple was expanded in 1886 and further renovated in 1891. Although it collapsed twice due to the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Yokohama Air Raids, Chinese residents from all over Japan and the residents of Yamashita-cho worked together to rebuild it each time. The current Kan'non Temple is the fourth generation and was opened in 1990.

Visitors can enter the grounds for free, and even if you don't enter the main shrine, you can still enjoy the majestic exterior. If you wish to visit the main shrine, please pay 500 yen and purchase incense at the reception desk on the grounds. Gold leaf can also be purchased at the reception desk.

Kan'non Temple is located within Yokohama Chinatown. Access to Yokohama Chinatown is convenient by train. It's a 6-minute walk from the Chinatown exit of JR Keihin-Tohoku Negishi Line "Ishikawacho Station". It's also a 10-minute walk from the south exit of the same line's "Kannai Station". Furthermore, it's a 5-minute walk from Minatomirai Line's "Motomachi-Chukagai Station". If you come by car, there is a coin parking lot nearby, but it's recommended to visit early in the morning as it gets very crowded on weekends and holidays.
