The former Kodokan School in Mito City was the largest feudal school in Japan built by Tokugawa Nariaki. It was a place where a wide range of academic and martial arts were taught. The Shizen-do Hall is a must-see, where Keiki spent his days in confinement, and there are many highlights such as hanging scrolls with slogans of reverence and the family crest on tatami mats. It is also a famous spot where 800 plum trees of 60 varieties bloom. The spirit of "learning freely without being rigid" that Nariaki aimed for still lives on today!
