Wakayama Castle is one of the "100 Famous Japanese Castles". It was once the residence of the Kishu Tokugawa family, who were one of the three families of the Tokugawa shogunate. The castle's towering presence on Mt. Torafusu is a reminder of its former glory, and exudes a dignified atmosphere befitting of the Tokugawa family's name.

Wakayama Castle, also known as "Tiger Crouching Castle" or "Bamboo Fence Castle," was built by Hidenaga, the younger brother of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
