Located near the Yunomine Onsen, Kumano Hongu Taisha is the head shrine of the Kumano Sanzan and exudes an atmosphere of ancient tradition. It is the first place you will come to after completing the difficult journey along the "Nakahechi" pilgrimage route. The first place to view Kumano Hongu Taisha is called "Fushimi-Oji," which is named after the act of bowing down in worship upon finally reaching Kumano Taisha. In 1995, the shrine was designated as an important cultural property of Japan. As you climb the 158 stone steps leading to the main hall, banners flutter on either side and the surrounding cedar forest evokes a sense of ancient history. Upon passing through the shrine gate, a magnificent hinoki bark-covered main hall appears. To the left are the gods Fusumi and Hayatama, in the center is the main god Kotsumi Okami, and to the right is the goddess Amaterasu. This shrine is worshipped as a god of traffic safety, good fishing, happy families, marital harmony, and longevity, and has welcomed many visitors over the years!

Yunomine Onsen is known as Japan's oldest hot spring, and still retains the atmosphere of an old-fashioned hot spring, allowing you to feel the charm of the hot spring town. It is said that people have been visiting Yunomine Onsen since ancient times on their way to Kumano, performing "yugori" (removing hot spring water from the body) and healing the fatigue of their journey at this holy site. Especially famous is the natural hot spring rock bath called "Tsubo-yu". The color of this hot spring is said to change seven times a day, and it is registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the pilgrimage route. Access

Arrive in about an hour by car from the Uetoda IC
If using public transportation to access Yunomine Onsen, first arrive at JR Kii-Tanabe Station. From there, take the Ryujin Bus bound for Hasshingumon-Ouji, which takes about an hour and 30 minutes. The nearest bus stop is Yunomine Onsen, where you will get off. If using a private car, take National Route 42 and 311 via the Uetoda IC on the Hanwa Expressway, and arrive in about an hour after traveling about 50km. Follow the road signs and head towards Yunomine Onsen.
