This is the castle of Hikone City, also known for its local character "Hikonyan". It was built by Naomasa Ii's son, Naokatsu, and is now designated as a special historic site by the country. Hikone Castle at night, when it is reflected with the moon, is one of the Hikone Eight Scenic Views, and you can enjoy a different view of the castle from during the day.

History

Historic Castle Built in the Edo Period
Hikone Castle was built in 1604 by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu to replace Sawayama Castle. The castle was moved from Otsu Castle and not only boasts a beautiful appearance as a political symbol, but also excels in military function to protect the territory from external enemies. In 1952, the castle tower was designated as a national treasure. Today, it is a popular tourist spot and landmark of Hikone.
