Nara Park

The charm of Nara Park lies in the fact that you can interact with approximately 1,200 wild deer. In the park, you can purchase deer crackers and feeding them is one of the activities that both adults and children can enjoy. The deer in Todai-ji Temple are relatively accustomed to tourists, but it's important to remember that they are still wild animals and to be careful not to startle them suddenly. After interacting with the deer, it's recommended to buy souvenirs in the area around Todai-ji Temple that feature deer as a memory.

Within the grounds of Nara Park, there are many temples and shrines scattered around, such as Todaiji Temple, famous for Nara's Great Buddha, Kofukuji Temple, a treasure trove of important cultural properties, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine, famous for its wisteria. These buildings are precious places where you can learn about Japan's history and culture dating back to the Nara period. In addition, cultural facilities such as the National Museum and Shosoin are adjacent, making it a sure bet that you won't get bored even with a long stroll!

Wakakusayama, a gently sloping mountain covered with 33 hectares of grass at an elevation of 342 meters, should be one of the first things to catch your eye when visiting Nara Park. At the summit, there is the Otsukayama Kofun, a keyhole-shaped burial mound designated as a national historic site, which is one of its attractions that lets you feel the depth of history. Every January, a traditional event called Wakakusayama Yaki is held, where the entire mountain is set on fire, providing a powerful and spectacular view. If you visit at night, be sure to take in the panoramic view of the ancient city of Nara from the summit observatory!

Nara Park is a famous cherry blossom spot in the spring. From late March to late May, you can see a variety of cherry blossoms, and the elegant and blooming Narano-yaesakura, which blooms from late April to early May, is a must-see. The best place to see cherry blossoms in the Nara Park area is Kasugano-enchi. The point is that you can take pictures of the cherry blossoms with the deer of Nara. Another highlight is the Ukimi-do located in the Asuka-ga-hara-enchi in Nara Park, where you will surely be captivated by the cherry blossoms that surround the temple.
