This hostel suffers a few major problems. For.one, there is no one there most of the time, so check in must be done after 4pm, regardlesa if your room is ready (like hours was). Also we had issues with the guests staying upstairs stepping too hard on the wooden floors and there was no one there to respond for it. The pictures on the app are not accurate (at least for our room), making it look much brighter and nicer. Also, it is clearly stated that towels are not provided, so we carried our own, only to find out the hostel does offer towels are a very reasonable cost. Laundry facilities are available within the premises, however laundry detergent could not be found (although it is included in the cost). Lastly the common areas need a facelift as they get messy and cluttered very fast.
If you want to experience a more realistic stay at a traditional Japanese house, this could be the place. However, mindful of the fact the place is mostly unsupervised and other guests may not share your understanding of basic rules in an old wooden structure.
Overall we really liked the authentic feel of an old wooden Japanese house, the tatami floors and futons, the paper window panes and the somewhat neglected but beautiful garden.
This place needs a little attention and it could be a gem.
