Kyoto's oldest Zen temple and the head temple of the Rinzai sect Kennin-ji.
The oldest Zen temple in Kyoto, founded by the monk Eisai who introduced the Rinzai sect to Japan. It is the head temple of the Rinzai Kennin-ji school. The temple grounds feature many highlights such as the national treasure Wind and Thunder Gods, and the twin dragon painting on the ceiling of the Hatto (Dharma Hall). The Hojo (Abbot's quarters), garden, and tea room are open to the public at all times.
