The oldest Hachiman shrine in Kyoto, founded by Kukai.
The Hiraoka Hachimangu Shrine is the oldest Hachiman shrine in Kyoto, with a statue of Hachiman in the form of a monk drawn by the great monk Kukai as its enshrined deity. The highlight is the "Flower Ceiling," which is open to the public twice a year in spring and autumn. The 44 brightly colored flower paintings on the ceiling are overwhelming to behold.
