The building is an Edo period structure beautifully remodeled and clean. The newer section plays off of the older building with large, clean, rooms. The pictures match well with the reality we experienced. The amenities were all first class while the price was very reasonable. There is also an excellent blend of traditional and modern.
The staff were exceptional. We felt so welcomed. The food was exceptional as well. We had a choice of Japanese or Western breakfasts that were different everyday. The dinners were special as well with the staff “throwing together” several artistic and imaginative dishes to add to what was on the menu.
Yuguwara is definitely off the beaten path. Fujiya Ryokan is located well up a river valley leading to Hakone. There is a wonderful forest park along a set of streams within 3 minutes from the Ryokan. A half hour drive up the valley and over the ridge and we were in Hakone.
Fujiya Ryokan is a must for anyone who wants to get out of the mainstream modern Japan and enjoy the blend of old and new. This is a small, intimate setting where the experience is intimate and special.
We will be back.
