The highlight of Echizen Washi Village is the papermaking experience at the Papyrus Hall. The staff provides thorough support, so even first-timers need not worry. Start by choosing your preferred size from a variety of sizes ranging from postcard size to large size. The thrill of completing your own original washi paper using pressed flowers and dyes is immense! It's also recommended to check the Papyrus Hall's website in advance, as they offer optional activities such as making uchiwa fans.
Point 2

Experience the Craftsmanship of Papermaking Up Close

At the Uotachi Craft Museum in Echizen Washi Village, you can witness the papermaking skills of craftsmen up close. The Uotachi Craft Museum is a restored building from the mid-Edo period that was used for papermaking, and it is a highly valuable historical structure. The tools used are also traditional, and the classic process is employed, making it a very rare sight that can only be seen here. It's also possible to experience this traditional papermaking, so why not give it a try if you're interested?
Point 3

At the Paper Culture Museum, you can learn about the history of Echizen Washi paper from its inception to the present day. This valuable facility allows you to learn about why Echizen Washi paper spread from Fukui to the world and to view the works of master craftsmen, including Living National Treasures. In addition to Echizen Washi paper, you can also see creative tapestries made from paper produced in various regions throughout Japan up close.
Point 4

Don't Miss the Shops!

Don't miss "Washi Sho Echizen," located inside the Papyrus building. This shop offers unique souvenirs that can only be found here. A wide variety of products are available, from traditional Japanese paper for calligraphy and painting to book covers and stamp books. Recently, the antibacterial mask cases made from Echizen washi, which are convenient to use while wearing a mask, have also become popular.
Point 5

Visit Okata Shrine Nearby

Echizen Washi Village Visit Okata Shrine Nearby
We recommend visiting Okata Shrine in addition to Echizen Washi no Sato. Okata Shrine is known as a shrine that enshrines Kawakami Gozen, the "ancestor of paper." The spread of Echizen washi was due to the sudden increase in demand for paper for Buddhist sutras, and materials related to Echizen washi are also stored in Nara's Shosoin repository. Papermaking craftsmen have continued to pray to Kawakami Gozen since ancient times, and have had a significant impact on the history of Echizen washi.

Recommended to Access by Car!
The nearest station to Echizen Washi Village is JR Takefu Station. However, it's quite a distance away, making it difficult to travel on foot. It is possible to travel by bus, but the number of buses is limited, making it a tourist attraction that is restricted by the timetable. Therefore, it is recommended to access by car! By accessing by car, you can also visit other tourist attractions such as Okata Jinja, which enshrines the god of papermaking, in addition to Echizen Washi Village.

Fee

Echizen Washi Village Recommended: Paid Papermaking Experience!

Recommended: Paid Papermaking Experience!
Echizen Washi no Sato consists of the Papyrus Museum, Uchida Craft Museum, and the Paper Culture Museum. Admission to the Uchida Craft Museum and the Paper Culture Museum usually costs 200 yen for adults, but we highly recommend the paid papermaking experience. You can learn the traditional Echizen Washi papermaking technique from skilled craftsmen and create a unique piece of Echizen Washi paper that is one-of-a-kind in the world. The fee varies depending on the size of the paper, so start by considering the size you prefer!

Required time

Take Your Time When Experiencing Papermaking!
You can explore the Uchida Craft Museum and the Paper Culture Museum in Echizen Washi Village in just 30-60 minutes. However, if you want to experience papermaking at the Papyrus House, it can take 20-40 minutes just for the papermaking experience, so it's recommended to visit with plenty of time. Especially when making large sheets of paper, be careful as it takes time for them to dry.
