Smelt fishing can be enjoyed from early January to mid-February each year when the lake surface freezes. The temperature drops considerably, so it's recommended to dress warmly when visiting.

At the "Okhotsk Squirrel Park" located near Abashiri Lake Hot Springs, you can have a rare experience of encountering adorable squirrels. The park is also popular as a spot for taking photogenic photos with squirrels, as various objects and flowers are planted throughout the park.

At the Abashiri Sports and Training Field, located on the shores of Lake Abashiri and surrounded by forests and lakes, you can enjoy park golf. There are 18 holes with a total length of 703 meters, and the par is 66. Equipment rental is also available, so you can enjoy the game even if you come empty-handed. The usage fee is very reasonable at only 370 yen, including equipment rental, making it an attractive point that you can easily play without hesitation.

Abashiri Kohan Onsen can be accessed by driving on National Route 39 from JR Abashiri Station, which takes about 10 minutes. There are also hot spring inns within walking distance from JR Yobito Station, the next station after Abashiri Station. If coming from outside the area, the Memanbetsu Airport serves as the gateway. It's a 15-minute drive from the airport by car, and rental cars are available in the vicinity of the airport. During peak tourist seasons such as summer, it's recommended to make reservations in advance due to congestion.

Around the Abashiri Lake Onsen, various facilities such as the popular tourist attractions "Abashiri Prison Museum," "Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum," and "Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples" are scattered. Each facility offers unique opportunities to learn about the history and nature of Abashiri, which cannot be found anywhere else in Japan. As for souvenirs, there are many unique items for sale that utilize local specialties and culture, such as "Abashiri Ryuhyo Beer" and "Nipopopo Dolls."
