Highlights

Point 1

View the Cobalt Blue Color

Beppu Benten Pond View the Cobalt Blue Color
The spring water at Beppu Benten Pond has a surprisingly transparent cobalt blue color. The secret to this blue color is the unique karst topography of the area, where high-transparency water containing calcium reflects only blue light when illuminated by sunlight. It's said that 186 liters per second and 11 tons per minute of water spring out, which is surprising both in terms of its color and the amount of water that springs out.
Point 2

Try Drinking the Legendary Spring Water

Beppu Benten Pond Try Drinking the Legendary Spring Water
The water from Beppu Benten Pond has been selected as one of the 100 best waters in Japan and there is a water supply station beside the shop where we travelers can easily drink it for free. There is a legend that says "If you drink one cup, you will live one more year, and if you drink two cups, you will live two more years." Let's try drinking this "water of longevity"! You can bring your own container such as a water bottle or purchase one on site.
Point 3

Enjoy the Contrast of Red Stones and Blue Ponds

Beppu Benten Pond Enjoy the Contrast of Red Stones and Blue Ponds
Downstream where spring water flows, the red-stained stones are a must-see. This is not due to water pollution or water quality, but rather a type of algae called "benimadara" that adheres to the surface of the stones, causing them to turn red. The benimadara on these stones is a very valuable algae designated as a quasi-endangered species, and it is said to only grow in clean water and in shade. The contrast of the blue pond and the red stones is a must-see!
Point 4

Experience Trout Fishing

Beppu Benten Pond Experience Trout Fishing
On the premises, there is a trout farm that uses the spring water from Beppu Benten Pond to cultivate rainbow trout. Here, you can experience trout fishing and even have your catch cooked on the spot. Don't miss the chance to taste the delight of eating fresh rainbow trout swimming in this beautiful water! For those who are not good at fishing, you can also enjoy eating at a nearby restaurant, so please feel free to relax.
