The preserved town of Takehara, which prospered in salt and sake production during the Edo period, still retains the beautiful mansions of wealthy merchants and historic temples. The white-walled and black-lacquered buildings create a sophisticated atmosphere, allowing visitors to feel as if they have slipped back in time. Efforts are also being made to utilize the historic buildings in new ways, making it possible to enjoy their atmosphere in modern times while passing on their legacy to future generations.
